We officially reached National Preparedness Level (NPL) 5 today, the highest it goes. This means resources are stretched very thin across the country. There are currently 24,000 firefighters across the country fighting fires. When we hit NPL 5, federal land management agencies can start "drafting" non-typical fire fighters to help fight the fires. These folks may be biologists, or timber folks, or whatever, but they are also trained to fight fires. I'm one of those kinds of people who has taken the classes and am trainied to fight fire, but I have a role in the fire community that cannot take me away for two weeks.
On another note, I recently attempted to assist the Brins Fire near Sedona, AZ, with some BARC maps. I was unsuccessful in getting any clear imagery until the BAER team was done, but I did provide some assistance with 3D image visualizations. They sent me their hand-mapped burn severity map and I imported it into Google Earth, created a few screen shots, and then sent them the interactive KMZ. Those files have been posted on the web on the Brins Fire BAER page. Check out the links on the right side bar of the page. Both Google Earth links were my creations.
