Last night, my wife and I went on a walk around our neighborhood. We had a very nice sunset, but it had the feel of a smoke-induced light show. I commented that it seemed like there was a fire nearby. I knew none were burning locally, so I dismissed the idea.
Today, CNN is reporting on two wildfires in Southern California burning actively that had smoke trails all the way to Ogden, UT. Ah ha! I was seeing the affects of those fires, although we couldn't smell anything. Those fires, the Sawtooth Complex and Millard Complex, are threatning to merge into one large complex and burn burn burn. The Millard Complex is on the San Bernardino NF, so I won't be surprised to get a call on that fella.
I am preemptively tasking ASTER to get some 15m VNIR looks at the fire in the coming week. There is an L7 SLC-Off acquisition tomorrow, but it may be too early in the fire. Based off SoCal fires three years ago, I imagine people are nervous about these fires. If they join, they could quickly grow and burn many acres of dead trees on the San Bernardion NF. Looks like it could be interesting.
