I came a cross a page on the Boston Globe showing some fantastic photos of the fire action/activity in California. Check out all 17 photos here.
This is a photo showing a converted DC-10 that drops retardant on large fires. Most retardant planes are much smaller than this because these planes have to fly very slowly and very low. It must be quite the spectacle to see a passenger plane like this swoop low over your head and drop this payload.
