I opened the Active Fire Maps this morning and just laughed. The Western US has measles! This, mixed with an article on CNN yesterday, reflect the crazy active week of fires we've had. CNN said we've had 1,000 new wildfires ignite since Monday of this week. How insane.
I've got a number of fires on my plate all over the west right now. Everyone's asking for map products. If only we had more sensors.
Here's the large incidents map from this morning. 84 fires listed at 500 acres or greater. Poor Nevada. They have burned a few years in a row.
Long time no hear from buddy. You are telling me. You said, "poor Nevada" because of all our fires. We now live in Nevada and have had quite a summer's view of a lot of smoke from the Angora fire.
I'm a remote sensing analyst for RedCastle Resources under contract at the U.S. Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC) in Salt Lake City, UT. My primary job is to use remote sensing and GIS technologies to map the burn severity of wildfires on all U.S. Forest Service lands. This blog is an attempt to chronicle my efforts.
