MSNBC today posted an article about the Western fire season. They reported that over 8.7 million acres have burned in the U.S. this year, nearly double the 10 year average. I'm mapped nearly 2 million of those acres for BAER teams this year. Those 2 million acres represent 96 fires I've done, which averages out to about 20,000 acres / fire. This has been a very busy year and in August alone I mapped 35 fires. I've probably already done a dozen in the first two weeks of September.
All the fires mentioned in the article (Day, Tripod, Flick Creek, and Derby) have either already been mapped or have been requested. This season should slow down drastically next week with a crazy strong cold front coming that may drop snow on a number of fires. We're going to drop nearly 30 degrees in our daytime highs as well after this front moves through. It'll sure make it feel like football season!
